Ghent HealthTech Tuesday #13
From Lab to Patient: 3D Printing, Bioprinting & Clinical Translation at UZ Gent

About this event
We're taking a closer look at how medical innovation moves from idea to impact.
From a jaw rebuilt in a day to tissue that can grow its own blood vessels, UZ Gent is developing technologies that are already shaping the future of healthcare. But how do these innovations make the leap from research to the operating room? What does it take to scale new technologies in a clinical environment? And where do startups, investors, and industry partners fit in?
At this edition, we bring together three perspectives on innovation at UZ Gent.
Prof. Dr. Renaat Coopman and Dr. Benjamin Denoiseux will share how UZ Gent is building a centralized 3D Platform that combines virtual surgical planning, AI-assisted augmented reality, and medical 3D printing. Using the "Jaw-in-a-Day" protocol as a case study, they'll discuss the opportunities and challenges of scaling these technologies within a hospital setting.
Prof. Dr. Philip Blondeel and Florian Vanlauwe will explore the future of 3D bioprinting, showcasing a novel bioink that enables microvascular networks to self-organize within printed tissue—an important step toward creating larger, vascularized tissues and eventually functional organs.
Finally, Prof. Dr. Bruno Verhasselt will explain how UZ Gent funds and prioritizes clinical innovation, how ideas move from lab to bedside, and how startups, investors, and researchers can engage with the hospital's innovation ecosystem.
After the presentations, we'll open the floor for an interactive Q&A where the audience drives the conversation.
